The Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA Ghana) has launched a one-year initiative titled the "Ghana Nuclear Phase II Completion and Investment Readiness Support Programme." This project is designed to bolster the second phase of the country’s roadmap toward establishing its first nuclear power plant, following the successful completion of the initial phase. The programme aims to bridge critical gaps in the sector by focusing on institutional coordination, human resource development, and the refinement of regulatory frameworks.
Central to this initiative is the objective of making Ghana "investment ready" for nuclear energy. The IEA will provide policy research and technical support to assess workforce requirements and ensure that the country possesses the necessary human capital to manage a nuclear energy sector. By improving the investment framework, the project seeks to create a stable environment that will allow the government to confidently solicit bids for the construction and operation of its debut nuclear facility.
This development aligns with the milestones set by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) for countries embarking on nuclear power programmes. As Ghana works toward fulfilling the requirements of Phase Two, the IEA’s support will facilitate better collaboration among key stakeholders and state agencies. The initiative is expected to provide the foundational governance structures required to ensure that the transition to nuclear energy is both safe and economically viable, contributing to the nation's long-term energy security goals.
