Ghana has officially inaugurated a 50-megawatt (MWp) solar power plant in Galgu, located near Yendi, following its successful construction by the wholly Ghanaian-owned firm First Sky Limited. The $59 million facility represents a major milestone in the country’s transition toward renewable energy and was developed under the auspices of the Bui Power Authority (BPA). The plant is designed to bolster the national electricity grid, specifically targeting the reduction of power outages while promoting sustainable, clean energy sources.
The project has received significant praise from the Parliamentary Select Committee on Energy and Mines, which highlighted the technical proficiency displayed by the local workforce. Members of the committee commended First Sky Limited for executing the complex infrastructure project using entirely local expertise, showcasing Ghana's growing capacity to manage large-scale renewable energy ventures without external reliance. Beyond the technical achievements, the construction phase significantly benefited the local economy by creating numerous job opportunities for residents and stimulating socio-economic development within the Galgu area.
This new facility is part of a broader strategic initiative by the Bui Power Authority to diversify Ghana's energy mix and expand its renewable footprint. The BPA has announced plans to further increase its solar capacity by an additional 300MW in the coming years. By integrating more solar power into the national grid, the government aims to achieve a more resilient and environmentally friendly energy sector, ensuring a stable power supply for both industrial and domestic consumers across the northern regions and the country at large.
