On September 19, 2023, the Ghanaian film community and international dignitaries gathered in London for a landmark screening of the restored cinematic masterpiece, "His Majesty’s Sergeant." Organized by Flamboyant Damsel Films and Grace Abounds LTD, the event served as a dual commemoration of the birthday of Ghana’s first President, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, and a celebration of a remarkable 103 years of Ghanaian cinema. The screening, which attracted filmmakers, diplomats, and enthusiasts, highlighted the enduring power of Ghanaian storytelling and its historical significance on the global stage.
Originally released in 1984, "His Majesty’s Sergeant" provides a poignant historical lens into the experiences of Gold Coast soldiers during World War II. The film underwent a meticulous restoration process led by Ato Yanney Jnr to preserve this vital piece of national heritage for contemporary audiences. A significant highlight of the evening was the presence of Rev. Dr. Chris Hesse, the film’s original cinematographer. Dr. Hesse shared invaluable insights into the production’s history and the challenges of early filmmaking, offering the audience a bridge between the pioneering era of Ghanaian cinema and its modern revival.
Representing the Ghanaian government, H.E. Acquinas Tawiah Quansah, the Deputy High Commissioner to the UK, addressed the assembly to emphasize the importance of the creative arts. He encouraged Ghanaian filmmakers to actively leverage available government support and national funds to bolster future productions and tell authentic Ghanaian stories. The event also saw participation from representatives of the British Film Institute and the National Film Authority, signaling a collaborative spirit between international film bodies and Ghanaian creators.
Beyond the cinematic showcase, the evening featured a vibrant live performance by Afrobeats artist FADU, blending traditional heritage with modern cultural expression. Supported by organizations such as Rainbow Radio International, the event underscored Dr. Kwame Nkrumah’s foundational vision of using film as a tool for national identity and Pan-African unity. The successful international screening of this restored classic sets a precedent for the continued preservation and promotion of Ghana’s rich filmic legacy for future generations.
