The Minister for Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Abla Dzifa Gomashie, has officially launched the European Union (EU) Film Festival Ghana 2026 in Accra. The launch, held on October 5, 2026, marks a significant milestone in the ongoing cultural cooperation between Ghana and the European Union. Attended by diplomats, including the EU Ambassador to Ghana, Rune Skinnebach, and various creative industry stakeholders, the event was described as a celebration of culture, creativity, dialogue, and friendship. The festival aims to showcase a diverse range of cinematic traditions while providing a platform for international cultural exchange and capacity-building for local practitioners.
During the ceremony, Minister Gomashie emphasized the vital role of the creative arts in national development, noting their contribution to identity, tourism, and job creation. She highlighted the government's dedication, under the leadership of President John Dramani Mahama, to facilitating new opportunities for Ghanaian talent. The Minister encouraged emerging filmmakers to leverage the festival’s resources for skill development and networking. This edition of the festival continues to build on the themes of peace, tolerance, and inclusion that have defined the event since its return from a five-year hiatus in 2023, seeking to provide young creatives with the exposure needed to compete on a global stage.
A key component of the 2026 festival is the focus on strengthening partnerships between the government and the creative community. Minister Gomashie expressed deep gratitude for the EU’s support in the revision and implementation of Ghana’s Cultural Policy, which aims to enhance the country’s cultural framework and economic opportunities. By screening both European and Ghanaian films, the festival fosters a collaborative environment for storytelling and co-production. EU Ambassador Rune Skinnebach reiterated that the festival is designed to be more than a screening series; it is a bridge for fostering lasting connections between Ghanaian and European artists, ensuring a vibrant future for the creative sectors of both regions.
