Guinea-Bissau’s National Electoral Commission (CNE) has officially announced that the presidential and legislative elections scheduled for December 6 cannot proceed as planned. The commission informed the military junta leader, General Horta N’Tam, that the current political and security environment does not support the conduct of a credible vote. This development marks a significant setback in the West African nation's attempts to restore civilian governance following a military coup last year.
The commission cited several critical obstacles to holding the vote, most notably the lack of readiness among the country's political parties. According to the CNE, no political organization is currently in a suitable position to contest the elections. This institutional unreadiness is compounded by volatile security conditions that the commission believes would compromise the integrity of the electoral process, making a successful transition to civilian rule unfeasible at this stage.
A central point of tension in the electoral process involves the status of exiled former president Umaro Sissoco Embaló. The commission highlighted that security concerns regarding Embaló’s potential return have not been resolved, creating a significant barrier to a fair contest. Furthermore, the relationship between the ruling junta and the former president has deteriorated, with military leaders increasingly distancing themselves from Embaló's administration. This internal friction within the security apparatus has contributed to ongoing discontent among military ranks.
The postponement leaves Guinea-Bissau in a state of political uncertainty as the transition to democratic rule remains stalled. While the junta has previously expressed a commitment to returning the country to constitutional order, the absence of a new timeline for the elections raises questions about the duration of military rule. International observers and regional blocs are expected to monitor the situation closely as the junta and electoral officials deliberate on a revised roadmap for the transition.
