The Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) and the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) have initiated a series of critical infrastructure upgrades across the Ashanti Region to address persistent power reliability issues. The projects, which include the construction of a fifth feeder and significant transmission line enhancements, are designed to benefit over 1.5 million households and businesses. GRIDCo Chief Executive Officer, Ing. Frank Asirifi Otchere, announced that these developments aim to stabilize the regional grid and accommodate growing electricity demand by the end of 2026. A central component of the upgrade is the Kumasi–Anwomaso transmission line, which is being expanded from a capacity of 360 megawatts to 1,000 megawatts. Additionally, a delegation recently inspected work at the Ridge substation, where a new higher-capacity transformer is being installed to provide an additional 80 megawatts to the local supply. These technical improvements are part of a broader strategy to modernize the 161kV line network in Greater Kumasi, ensuring the transmission infrastructure can handle future loads without the frequent interruptions previously reported by residents. To facilitate these upgrades, the ECG has scheduled rotational power outages in several communities between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. On November 3, 2026, specific areas including Pankrono, Besease, Boankra, Kubease, Wiamoase, and Kenyase will experience service interruptions. GRIDCo and ECG officials have apologized for the inconvenience, emphasizing that the temporary outages are necessary for maintenance and the integration of new equipment. A comprehensive communication plan is reportedly in place to provide timely updates to the public as work progresses through the various project phases. While the full suite of upgrades is slated for completion by December 2026, some components, such as the fifth feeder and the line capacity boost, are being prioritized for earlier delivery. The Ministry of Energy has further assured that the Ashanti Region’s power situation will see additional reinforcement through the AKSA Energy project. These collective efforts represent a significant investment in the region’s energy security, aimed at ending the cycle of intermittent power cuts and supporting local industrial and domestic growth.
