Great Ghana Day Out Tourism Launch and Western Gospel Awards Headline Entertainment Calendar

Ghana’s tourism and entertainment landscape is set for a vibrant close to 2026 with the launch of "The Great Ghana Day Out" and the announcement of the 6th Western Gospel Awards (WGA) nominees. Scheduled for launch on World Tourism Day, September 27, 2026, the Great Ghana Day Out is a domestic initiative by Do Ghana and WangoWango, in collaboration with Joy FM. It aims to encourage exploration of the nation’s heritage ahead of Ghana’s 70th Independence anniversary in 2027, featuring thematic road trips starting in January. Simultaneously, the gospel community is gearing up for the WGA on November 14, 2026, at the Western Serene Atlantic Hotel, where artists like Esther Godwyll, Yvonne Menz, and Kofi Karikari will compete for the Western Gospel Artiste of the Year. This focus on local talent and heritage highlights a growing movement to celebrate Ghanaian identity through travel and the arts.

In addition to these events, excellence in the hospitality sector was recently recognized at the Ashanti Regional Tourism Awards, where the Golden Bean Hotel in Kumasi was named the 3-Star Hotel of the Year. General Manager Randy Attuquaye Clottey and Sales Manager Maame Ama Asantewaa dedicated the award to their team and customers, emphasizing the hotel's role in enhancing regional tourism. Meanwhile, the corporate side of the entertainment industry continues to thrive, as seen with television personality Abena Kyei Boakye, who recently secured a brand ambassadorial deal with Glow Washing Powder. Unveiled at the ESP Hotel in Labone, Boakye’s partnership with Glow Soaps & Detergents underscores the value of maintaining a scandal-free professional image and the brand's commitment to affordable cleaning solutions for Ghanaians.

Amidst these celebrations, industry leaders are advocating for structural reforms to ensure the creative economy's long-term sustainability. Madam Abla Dzifa Gomashie, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, has emphasized the critical need for enhanced intellectual property (IP) protection and capacity building within the Ghana Copyright Office. Speaking at the Afro-Caribbean Creative Bridge forum, she stressed that converting global interest in African creative works into economic opportunities requires robust legal safeguards for artists. This professional stability is often supported by personal foundations, a sentiment echoed by gospel star Piesie Esther, who recently shared how the backing of her husband, Enock Asiedu, has been a blessing to her family life and successful ministry.

However, the broader entertainment scene also faces legal and personal challenges. Dr. Gabrielle Henry, a former Miss Jamaica, has filed a lawsuit against the Miss Universe Organisation following a severe stage fall during the 2025 pageant in Thailand that resulted in a brain bleed and other injuries. The lawsuit claims several grievances against the organization and its parent companies. In another legal tangle, Nigerian musician Speed Darlington has publicly threatened a physical confrontation with Burna Boy, a feud rooted in ongoing defamation allegations and legal disputes currently in court. As the industry looks toward the major milestones of 2027, these stories reflect a sector that is maturing through both the celebration of excellence and the resolution of complex legal and industry-wide challenges.
