The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has issued a stern warning to the general public against the obstruction or physical assault of its officers during official compliance operations. This directive follows a recent confrontational incident involving GRA personnel during an intelligence-led enforcement exercise at Jamila Homes. Accra Central Area Enforcement Officer, Joseph Annang, addressed the matter on October 8, 2026, signaling a zero-tolerance approach toward any interference with the authority’s mandate.
According to the GRA, the operation at Jamila Homes was part of its ongoing efforts to ensure tax compliance and verify records. However, the situation escalated into a clash when individuals at the scene allegedly attempted to prevent the officers from carrying out their duties. Mr. Annang characterized the resistance as unacceptable, noting that the authority would not be intimidated while executing its legal responsibilities to the state. He emphasized that the GRA operates within a clear legal framework that empowers its staff to conduct inspections and audits at various business premises.
In a strong message directed at those who seek to hinder revenue collection, Mr. Annang warned that the authority will now respond with "equal measure" to any form of aggression. He stated that the GRA is prepared to use the full force of the law against perpetrators of violence or obstruction. "We will come at you with equal measure," he remarked, reinforcing that legal actions, including prosecution and heavy fines, would be pursued against anyone who harms or threatens GRA staff. The authority maintains that such confrontations only serve to complicate the tax administration process and disrupt national revenue targets.
The GRA has urged business owners and the public to cooperate with its officers to avoid such unfortunate incidents. The authority clarified that its compliance drives are essential for national development and that professional conduct is expected from both the officers and the taxpayers. By providing the necessary documentation and access during inspections, businesses can ensure a smooth process and avoid the legal consequences associated with non-compliance and obstruction of justice. The GRA remains committed to its mobilization goals but has made it clear that the safety of its personnel is a primary concern.
