The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has issued a stern warning to the general public regarding the safety of its personnel following an alleged assault on officers during a Value Added Tax (VAT) compliance exercise. The incident occurred on October 7, 2026, at Jamila Home in the Westlands area of Accra, where officers were reportedly attacked while performing their official duties. The authority emphasized that it will no longer tolerate physical violence or the obstruction of its staff during revenue mobilization efforts.
Joseph Annang, a GRA enforcement officer, confirmed that the authority is prepared to pursue rigorous legal action against any individuals involved in the assault. Mr. Annang noted that the officers were engaged in a routine mission to ensure compliance with tax laws when the confrontation took place. He stated that such hostile behavior is unacceptable, as it directly threatens the physical well-being of government officials and undermines the state's ability to collect necessary revenue for national development.
While the GRA maintains that it seeks to foster professional and cordial relationships with all taxpayers, it stressed that the protection of its workforce is a non-negotiable priority. The authority indicated that recent incidents of hostility during enforcement drives have become a matter of grave concern. Consequently, the GRA is working closely with law enforcement agencies to ensure that those responsible for the attack at Westlands are identified and prosecuted to the full extent of the law.
In light of the incident, the GRA has called for increased public cooperation during its ongoing compliance and enforcement activities across the country. Business owners and taxpayers are encouraged to resolve any disputes or grievances through established administrative channels rather than resorting to physical confrontation. The authority remains committed to its enforcement mandate as part of its broader strategy to improve tax administration and ensure that all eligible entities fulfill their statutory obligations.
