The Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has intercepted a significant consignment of suspected cannabis at Torve, near Aflao in the Volta Region. On October 15, 2026, officers from the Preventive Monitoring Unit (PMU) seized 1,065 compressed parcels weighing 560.4 kilograms. The illegal shipment, which was being transported in a vehicle attempting to evade security, has an estimated market value of approximately GH₵11.2 million.
The operation began when customs officials acted on credible intelligence regarding a suspicious black Lexus vehicle. During a high-speed pursuit, the vehicle developed a mechanical fault, forcing the driver to abandon it and flee the scene on foot. Upon inspecting the abandoned car, which was found to be using falsified license plates, officers discovered the large cache of narcotics. Investigators also recovered a Ghana Card from the vehicle bearing the name Kunuhor Gidsway, which is currently being treated as a key piece of evidence in identifying the suspect.
The seized substances were subsequently verified by several security agencies, including the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) and the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC). Emmanuel Reginald Duh, the Sector Commander, described the interception as a major blow to regional drug trafficking networks. He emphasized that the seizure demonstrates the GRA's unwavering commitment to securing Ghana's borders and disrupting the flow of illicit goods into the country.
As part of the ongoing investigation, GRA Customs has recommended a thorough verification of the recovered Ghana Card and the commencement of laboratory testing on the parcels to confirm their chemical composition. Authorities are also working to trace the owner of the vehicle and the individual who fled. This successful operation is expected to provide fresh intelligence for the security services as they intensify efforts to combat organized crime and narcotics smuggling along the eastern border.
