A driver is receiving emergency medical treatment for severe chemical burns following a vehicle explosion in the Nadowli-Kaleo District of the Upper West Region. The incident occurred in Goriyiri when a long vehicle transporting a large consignment of hazardous chemicals caught fire, leading to a dangerous explosion that prompted an immediate emergency response.
The vehicle was carrying 35 Intermediate Bulk Containers (IBC totes) of hydrogen peroxide, a highly reactive chemical substance. Upon receiving the report, the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) dispatched a five-member firefighting team to the scene. The team was tasked with managing the blaze, containing the hazardous material, and ensuring the site was safe for both responders and the public.
In the aftermath of the explosion, the firefighters facilitated the rapid transport of the injured driver to a hospital for specialized treatment. The nature of chemical burns often requires intensive medical intervention, and the driver's condition is being closely monitored by healthcare professionals. While the vehicle sustained significant damage during the fire and subsequent blast, the GNFS has not yet provided a detailed assessment of the total property loss.
Investigations into the cause of the fire and the triggers for the explosion are currently underway. At this stage, authorities have not disclosed whether the fire started due to a mechanical fault or issues related to the storage of the chemical cargo. The incident highlights the ongoing risks associated with the transportation of industrial chemicals on national highways and the critical role of emergency services in mitigating such hazards.
