The Global Media Foundation (GLOMEF) has partnered with several advocacy groups to launch a climate change training initiative for 50 students at Fiapre Methodist Junior High School. The program, dubbed "Green Minds, Clean Schools," is part of a broader effort supported by ActionAid Ghana to foster environmental consciousness among the youth in the Sunyani West Municipality. This collaboration highlights a growing commitment to integrating climate education into the basic school curriculum through non-formal educational interventions.
The collaborative effort involves Citizens Watch Ghana and the Indigenous Women Empowerment Network (IWEN). During the training sessions, students were introduced to the fundamental concepts of climate change, focusing on mitigation and adaptation strategies tailored to local environmental challenges. The curriculum emphasizes responsible waste management and sustainable practices, aiming to equip young participants with the knowledge necessary to address ecological issues within their immediate surroundings. Organizers stressed that empowering students at a junior high level ensures that environmental stewardship becomes a lifelong habit.
The "Green Minds, Clean Schools" initiative has set an ambitious target to reach and educate more than one million young people across the country. Beyond theoretical knowledge, the training encourages students to develop school-based action plans and lead environmental advocacy within their communities. By combining education with practical engagement, GLOMEF and its partners aim to cultivate a new generation of climate-conscious leaders who can drive long-term environmental sustainability and influence policy through grassroots action.
