Ghana Water Limited (GWL) in the Accra East Region has officially recognized a group of domestic and commercial customers for their commitment to the prompt payment of water bills. The recognition ceremony, held as part of the company's Customer Service Month in October 2026, aimed to foster a culture of financial responsibility among consumers. By honoring those who meet their obligations on time, the utility provider seeks to highlight the direct link between revenue collection and the quality of water services provided to the public.
During the event, several high-profile commercial entities and individual homeowners received tokens of appreciation for their loyalty. Notable award recipients included Melcom Mall and The Palms by Eagles Airport City, alongside individual customers Ernestina Jamah Sowah and William Ablorh Adjei. Dr. Richard Appiah Otoo, the Chief Regional Manager of GWL Accra East, emphasized that these customers play a crucial role in the company's sustainability. He noted that regular payments are the lifeblood of GWL’s operations, enabling the maintenance of infrastructure and the consistent supply of potable water.
The initiative comes at a critical time for the utility provider, which continues to grapple with significant financial challenges. As of September 2026, outstanding water bills across both private and government sectors totaled more than GH₵258 million. Dr. Otoo pointed out that while the company prefers positive reinforcement, it maintains disconnection as a last resort for chronic non-payers. The management urged other consumers to emulate the awardees' prompt payment habits to prevent the accumulation of debt and ensure the continued expansion of water services across the region.
