Ghana Water Limited (GWL) has officially recognized and rewarded several domestic and commercial customers in the Accra East Region for their consistent and timely payment of water bills. The initiative, held during the company's Customer Service Month in October 2026, was designed to foster a culture of financial responsibility among consumers to ensure the continued delivery of essential water services. The recognition serves as both an appreciation of loyal clients and a public appeal for other users to settle their arrears promptly.
Among the award recipients were prominent commercial entities, including The Palms by Eagles Airport City and Melcom Mall, alongside individual domestic customers such as Ernestina Jamah Sowah and William Ablorh Adjei. These customers received various tokens of appreciation in recognition of their commitment to maintaining zero-balance accounts. Dr. Richard Appiah Otoo, the Chief Regional Manager for Accra East, emphasized that timely payments are the lifeblood of the company’s operations, enabling GWL to manage its overhead costs and improve service delivery across the region.
The reward scheme highlights the utility provider's struggle with mounting debt, which remains a significant hurdle to its operational efficiency. As of September 2026, outstanding water bills across the private and government sectors totaled more than GH₵258 million. Dr. Otoo noted that while the company prefers to engage with customers through recognition and dialogue, it will continue to use disconnections as a last resort for those who fail to meet their financial obligations. The utility provider is urging all consumers to clear their debts to support the maintenance of water infrastructure.
Responding to the recognition, the awardees expressed their gratitude and pledged to continue their practice of prompt payment. They also called on fellow citizens and businesses to view the payment of utility bills as a civic duty that directly impacts the quality of service received by all. GWL intends to use such initiatives to strengthen customer relations and enhance revenue collection strategies, ensuring that the utility can meet the growing demand for clean water in the capital.
