The Government of Ghana has officially relaunched the bidding process for the construction of the 540-metre Volivo Bridge, a critical infrastructure project designed to link Asutsuare in the Greater Accra Region with Dofor Adidome in the Volta Region. This development marks a significant step forward for an initiative that has faced more than a decade of delays. A Japanese consortium has emerged as the sole bidder for the construction contract, having submitted a joint bid security of $2.3 million.
Minister of Roads and Highways, Governs Kwame Agbodza, confirmed that the technical evaluation of the consortium’s proposal is currently underway. If the technical and subsequent financial assessments are successful, construction is projected to begin between late 2026 and early 2027. The Minister noted that the project was originally conceptualized during President John Mahama’s previous term in office and expressed gratitude to the Japanese government for its steadfast support in revitalizing the project following previous setbacks.
The bridge is a central component of President Mahama’s vision to enhance national connectivity and stimulate economic activity by facilitating easier movement across the Volta River. By providing a direct connection between the two riverbanks, the bridge is expected to significantly reduce travel times and logistics costs for traders and commuters alike. This connection is seen as vital for the socio-economic development of the communities along the river and the broader regional economy.
In addition to the main bridge structure, the government is also focusing on the development of necessary approach roads. These roads are essential to ensure the bridge is fully integrated into the national transport network and achieves its intended purpose upon completion. The ongoing evaluation process will ensure that the consortium’s technical specifications and financial proposals align with the government’s standards before formal construction agreements are finalized.
