KNUST Scholar and Trade Ministry Spearhead Initiatives to Revitalize Ghana’s Textile and Manufacturing Industries

Ghana is intensifying its efforts to bridge the gap between academia and industry through strategic initiatives aimed at revitalizing the nation's manufacturing and textile sectors. Professor Ebenezer Kofi Howard, Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Art at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), has issued a clarion call for the development of a sustainable raw material base to reduce the country’s heavy reliance on imported textiles. Simultaneously, the Ministry of Trade, Agribusiness, and Industry has broken ground on the Integrated Industry Training, Entrepreneurship and Database Hub (ITAED-Hub), a €3 million project designed to equip the youth with modern industrial skills.

During his inaugural lecture at KNUST, Professor Howard highlighted a concerning trend where over 70 percent of textiles in Ghana are currently imported, contributing to a sharp decline in local production capacity and employment. To reverse this, he proposed a comprehensive restructuring of the National Cotton Development Authority and the establishment of an 'Industrial Dyes Park' to minimize the importation of coloring agents. Professor Howard further advocated for leveraging Ghana’s petrochemical resources to produce synthetic fibers, suggesting that a robust policy framework could turn the garment sector into a catalyst for economic growth, similar to successful models in Vietnam and Bangladesh.

Complementing this vision for industrial self-reliance, Minister Elizabeth Ofosu-Agyare recently inaugurated the construction of the ITAED-Hub, a collaborative venture between the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research’s Institute for Industrial Research (CSIR-IIR) and the Association of Ghana Industries (AGI). Funded by the Skills Initiative for Africa (SIFA), the hub will provide specialized training in high-demand fields such as electric vehicles, smart engineering, Computer-Aided Design (CAD), and Computer-Aided Manufacturing (CAM). The project, expected to be completed within 18 months, aims to create sustainable job opportunities for the youth while providing the practical expertise necessary for modern industrial growth.

These developments underscore a growing consensus among government, academia, and the private sector on the need for integrated industrial planning. KNUST Vice-Chancellor Professor Rita Akosua Dickson and industry officials have emphasized that such collaborations are vital for maximizing the impact of educational research on national development. By combining the development of raw material bases with advanced technical training, Ghana aims to build a resilient industrial ecosystem capable of competing on a global scale and fostering long-term economic stability.
