The Ghana Physician Assistants Association (GPAA) has officially opened its 23rd Annual General Conference in Techiman, Bono East Region, to discuss the role of clinical officers in strengthening the nation's primary healthcare system. Held at the Jemima Grace Kodua Hotel, the event gathers healthcare professionals and policymakers to address the challenges of medical delivery in underserved areas. The conference serves as a critical platform for evaluating the impact of physician assistants on community-level health outcomes.
Under the theme "From Policy to Practice: Positioning the Physician Assistant to Deliver Comprehensive Free Primary Healthcare at the Community Level," the gathering features addresses from prominent health leaders. GPAA President Peter Akudugu Ayamba and the Director General of the Ghana Health Service, Dr. Samuel Kaba Akoriya, emphasized that physician assistants are frequently the primary providers of care in rural districts. They highlighted the urgent need for increased resources and institutional support to ensure these professionals can effectively bridge the gap between national health policies and actual community practice.
In addition to policy discussions, the conference includes a practical outreach component with free community health screenings organized at various locations across Techiman. This initiative aims to provide immediate clinical services to local residents while demonstrating the association's commitment to proactive public health. Participants at the conference are also advocating for improved infrastructure and better working conditions to help retain skilled personnel in the most remote parts of the country.
The outcomes of the week-long event are expected to inform future healthcare strategies as the government under President John Mahama continues to focus on expanding community-based medical services. By the close of the conference, the GPAA aims to produce a set of recommendations to guide the integration of physician assistants into the broader framework of Ghana's drive toward universal health coverage.
