The Ministry of the Interior has emerged as the highest-performing government institution in Ghana, according to a recent assessment by the Africa Centre for Entrepreneurship and Youth Empowerment (ACEYE). The ministry achieved a score of 80.26% in the Index of Government Institutions’ Performance Towards Economic Prosperity (IGIPTEP). This evaluation, conducted in partnership with the Atlas Network, sought to measure the effectiveness of various ministries in contributing to the nation's economic environment through transparent and efficient operations.
The IGIPTEP assessment used a range of metrics to evaluate the performance of public institutions, including service delivery, accountability, and workforce efficiency. While the Ministry of the Interior secured the top spot, the findings also highlighted significant challenges within other sectors of the government. At the opposite end of the spectrum, the Ministry of Trade, Agribusiness, and Industry was ranked as the lowest-performing institution, recording a score of 48.08%. This disparity underscores varying levels of institutional capability across the state's administrative functions.
According to the report, the performance gaps identified were particularly notable in areas such as financial management and the optimization of human resources. ACEYE noted that the index is designed to serve as a tool for public accountability, encouraging ministries to refine their operations for better public service delivery. The researchers observed that institutions with lower scores often struggled with bureaucratic inefficiencies that could hinder the broader goal of national economic prosperity.
Following the release of these results, ACEYE plans to host a series of stakeholder dialogues aimed at addressing the specific findings of the index. These discussions will involve policy experts and government officials to develop actionable reforms and improve institutional transparency. The initiative intends to support the current administration under President John Mahama by providing data-driven insights into where public service delivery can be strengthened to better serve the Ghanaian people.
