The Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) has officially commenced a series of consultations with key industry stakeholders to refine its upcoming Artisanal and Small-Scale Mining (ASM) Formalisation and Financing Support Programme. Scheduled for a full rollout in 2027, the initiative represents a strategic shift toward bringing informal miners into a regulated national framework. By engaging with government agencies, miners' associations, and civil society organizations, GoldBod intends to establish a robust foundation for an industry often fraught with regulatory and environmental challenges.
The primary objectives of the programme are to enhance oversight of the sector and provide small-scale miners with much-needed access to structured financing. Currently, many artisanal miners operate outside the formal banking system, a situation that often drives them toward unsustainable or illegal practices due to a lack of capital. Through this new framework, GoldBod aims to integrate these operators into the formal economy, ensuring that their activities are monitored while simultaneously providing the financial resources necessary for modern, safer mining techniques.
Beyond financial inclusion, the 2027 programme is designed to tackle the persistent issue of illegal mining. GoldBod emphasized that while the initiative seeks to support small-scale miners, it is strictly intended to formalise legitimate operations rather than provide a path to legality for illicit activities. By curbing destructive mining methods, the board expects to minimize environmental degradation, particularly the pollution of water bodies, while boosting overall national gold production and creating sustainable jobs within the mining sector.
As the consultation process continues, the board is working to ensure that the final policy reflects the practical realities faced by miners on the ground. These engagements are considered crucial for building the trust and compliance necessary for the programme's eventual success. With the 2027 launch date on the horizon, the Ghana Gold Board remains committed to transforming the ASM landscape into a transparent and economically viable pillar of the Ghanaian mining industry.
