National Abacus Competition and Literacy Challenge Drive New Push for Numeracy and AI Education in Ghana

Ghana is witnessing a renewed focus on foundational academic skills as stakeholders call for increased investment in numeracy and literacy to prepare the next generation for a technology-driven future. At the fifth National Abacus Competition, organized by Brainest EduCare Limited in partnership with World Access, education officials and experts highlighted a critical need to bolster mathematics education. Mr. Isaac Atta Baah of the Ministry of Education noted a significant disparity between the attention given to literacy versus numeracy in recent years. While literacy programs have flourished, he argued that numeracy initiatives require equivalent support to ensure students are well-equipped for advancements in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

The National Abacus Competition, themed "Smart Minds, Smart Future: The Power of Abacus in STEM," attracted approximately 2,000 pupils from over 100 schools, including international participants from the United Kingdom, Canada, and the United States. The event showcased students' skills in mental arithmetic, coding, and robotics, with more than 500 participants receiving awards for their performance. Notably, Mr. Baah pointed out that girls dominated the winner's circle, prompting a call for balanced educational interventions to ensure boys are also adequately supported and motivated in these competitive academic environments. The CEO of Brainest EduCare emphasized that such competitions are essential for nurturing the mental agility required for modern STEM careers.

Parallel to the focus on numeracy, Channel One TV and Citi FM have extended the entry deadline for The Literacy Challenge 2026 to July 30, 2026, to encourage broader participation. This year's competition targets students aged 11 to 15 and focuses on a timely and critical theme: the role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Ghana's education system. Contestants are tasked with writing a letter to the Minister of Education debating the pros and cons of AI integration in schools. This initiative aims to foster critical thinking and advanced writing skills, with the ultimate winner set to receive a GH¢10,000 cash prize and a laptop.

Together, these initiatives reflect a comprehensive effort to modernize Ghana's educational landscape. By bridging the gap between traditional mental arithmetic and forward-looking AI literacy, educators and private sector partners are working to create a robust pedagogical framework. The combination of competitive mathematics and analytical writing is expected to produce well-rounded students capable of navigating the complexities of the global digital economy. As these competitions gain momentum, the ongoing challenge for the Ministry of Education remains the equitable distribution of resources to sustain growth in both literacy and numeracy across the country.
