The Ghana Education Service (GES) Girls Child Unit has empowered more than 500 girls from various schools in Techiman to mark the International Day of the Girl Child. The event brought together students from both basic and senior high schools to discuss critical issues affecting their development and educational prospects. Focused on the theme "End Child Marriage and Invest in Girls’ Rights," the program aimed to equip participants with the knowledge and confidence to pursue their academic goals despite societal challenges.
During the celebration, officials and advocates addressed the persistent hurdles faced by young women in the region, particularly the prevalence of child marriage and its impact on school completion rates. Speakers highlighted the necessity of educational advocacy as a tool for liberation, urging the girls to prioritize their studies as a means of securing their futures. The GES Girls Child Unit emphasized that investing in the rights of girls is not only a moral imperative but a strategic necessity for national development.
The Member of Parliament for Techiman South, along with other key stakeholders, used the platform to call for more stringent measures against child marriage and cases of defilement. The discussion underscored systemic failures in protecting girls and the urgent need for comprehensive support structures for those affected by gender-based violence. By strengthening community-led efforts and legal enforcement, the organizers hope to create a safer environment where every girl can achieve her full potential and transition into leadership roles within her community.
