The Ministry of Finance has convened a high-level meeting with key maritime and logistics stakeholders to address worsening congestion and escalating cargo clearance costs at Tema Port. Chaired by the Deputy Minister of Finance, the engagement seeks to resolve operational bottlenecks that have significantly hindered trade efficiency and increased the financial burden on the business community. The meeting was organized in response to growing concerns over delays in shipping invoices, payment processing, and container releases.
The government's intervention follows urgent petitions from the Importers and Exporters Association of Ghana (IEAG). According to IEAG Executive Secretary Samson Asaki Awingobit, disruptions at the Meridian Port Services (MPS) Terminal 3 have left over 120 trucks stranded, leading to substantial logistical failures. These delays have forced importers to incur heavy demurrage charges to shipping lines and rising rent fees, which association members argue are becoming unsustainable for local businesses.
To mitigate the crisis, the government has introduced a directive limiting customs examinations to specific, high-priority items, a move intended to accelerate the flow of goods. The meeting also brought together officials from the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) and the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) to streamline cargo processing procedures. The Ministry expressed a commitment to exploring options that would allow importers to clear goods at alternative locations to alleviate the immediate pressure on the MPS terminal.
Moving forward, the Ministry of Finance aims to foster a more transparent and efficient port environment through continuous engagement with the private sector. By addressing identified operational challenges and improving the coordination between regulatory agencies and terminal operators, the government expects to establish more predictable cargo release processes. These improvements are seen as vital to lowering the cost of doing business and enhancing Ghana's competitiveness in regional trade.
