The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA), supported by the Ghana Police Service, has shut down an unlicensed manufacturing facility in Senfi Bekwai, located in the Ashanti Region. The facility, operated by Unni Associates Company Limited, was responsible for the production of Arcan Bitters. This enforcement action was triggered by reports that the company had persisted in manufacturing the herbal product despite a standing directive from the regulatory body to halt all operations immediately.
During the joint operation, officials discovered a significant quantity of finished products and raw materials on the premises. A total of 1,580 cartons of finished Arcan Bitters were confiscated, along with 5,000 empty bottles intended for future packaging. Furthermore, the team seized 23 barrels of bulk alcohol used in the production process. These items were secured as evidence of the company’s defiance of regulatory standards and its continued operation without the necessary legal authorization.
The closure reflects the FDA's intensified efforts to crack down on the production and sale of unregulated herbal medicines and alcoholic beverages. By operating without a license, the facility bypassed essential quality control measures designed to ensure the safety of consumers. The Authority has reiterated that it will not tolerate such breaches of the Public Health Act, which mandates that all food and drug production sites undergo rigorous inspection and certification before their products are made available to the public.
Following the seizure and closure, the FDA is expected to pursue further administrative or legal sanctions against Unni Associates Company Limited. The public is urged to remain vigilant and only purchase herbal products that carry the official FDA registration number. The Authority continues to encourage citizens to report suspicious manufacturing activities to help safeguard public health and safety across the country.
