The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA), supported by the Ghana Police Service, has shut down an unlicensed manufacturing facility in Senfi Bekwai, located in the Ashanti Region. The facility, operated by Unni Associates Company Limited, was found to be producing Arcan Bitters without the necessary regulatory approvals and quality certifications. This enforcement action was initiated after the company reportedly ignored a formal directive from the authority to halt all production activities immediately.
During the joint operation, officials seized a significant cache of products and manufacturing materials. The items confiscated included 1,580 cartons of finished Arcan Bitters ready for distribution, approximately 5,000 empty bottles intended for future batches, and 23 barrels of bulk alcohol used as a base for the herbal drink. The seizure was carried out to prevent these unverified products from reaching the market, as they had not undergone the mandatory safety assessments required under the Public Health Act.
The FDA's intervention was triggered by intelligence reports revealing that Unni Associates Company Limited was continuing its operations despite being flagged for non-compliance. The authority emphasized that such unlicensed production facilities pose a severe risk to public health, as the sanitary conditions and the quality of ingredients used in these environments remain unmonitored. By bypassing regulatory oversight, the manufacturer avoided the inspections necessary to ensure that their products are safe for human consumption.
The Food and Drugs Authority has since reiterated its commitment to protecting consumers from substandard and unregistered products. The regulator warned other manufacturers that operating without the requisite licenses or flouting official directives will lead to similar enforcement actions, including potential prosecution. Members of the public are encouraged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious manufacturing activities to the FDA to help safeguard national health standards.
