The Minister of Food and Agriculture, Eric Opoku, has officially launched a GH₵4.1 million inland valley irrigation project in Aninkroma, located in the Ashanti Region. This development is part of the broader Food System Resilience Project (FSRP), a strategic initiative designed to strengthen the nation’s agricultural infrastructure and ensure a more stable food supply. The ceremony marked the beginning of construction for facilities that will provide a dependable, year-round water source for local farmers.
The project focuses heavily on enhancing rice cultivation and other essential crops by mitigating the risks associated with erratic rainfall patterns. By utilizing the natural topography of the inland valley, the irrigation system will allow for continuous farming cycles throughout the year. This transition from rain-fed agriculture to a managed irrigation system is expected to increase productivity significantly and help stabilize the income of farmers within the Aninkroma enclave.
In addition to improving food security, the project is designed to act as a catalyst for local economic development and job creation. Minister Opoku noted that the initiative would provide better access to productive agricultural land and create numerous employment opportunities for residents. The government is particularly focused on using such infrastructure to attract the youth into the agricultural sector, demonstrating that modern farming can be a profitable and sustainable career path.
The GH₵4.1 million investment underscores the government's commitment to building a resilient food system capable of withstanding environmental shocks. By prioritizing irrigation in key agricultural hubs like the Ashanti Region, the ministry aims to foster long-term economic growth and reduce the country’s dependence on imported food staples. This project at Aninkroma is seen as a vital step toward achieving self-sufficiency in rice production and enhancing the overall welfare of rural farming communities.
