The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has officially launched its National Sensitisation Campaign in Accra, aimed at fostering regional integration and maintaining peace within the sub-region. During the launch, Ambassador Mohammed Lawan Gana emphasized the critical role that citizens play in promoting social cohesion and supporting the stability of West African nations. The initiative seeks to bridge the gap between regional policies and the grassroots level by ensuring that the public is well-informed about the benefits and goals of the community.
Ambassador Gana called for collective action to prevent conflict and counter the growing threat of disinformation, which often undermines regional stability. He urged the public to collaborate with stakeholders in disseminating accurate information about ECOWAS activities and initiatives. According to the Ambassador, sustained public education is essential for citizens to fully understand how to navigate and benefit from the various opportunities available through the regional bloc’s established frameworks.
The campaign also highlights the need for various economic sectors, including trade, agriculture, and youth-led enterprises, to leverage ECOWAS policies designed to enhance cross-border cooperation. Clement Boateng, Vice President of the Ghana Union of Traders Associations (GUTA), expressed support for the initiative but recommended that the campaign’s reach be extended beyond government institutions. He suggested that deeper engagement with trade associations and local communities would ensure that the message resonates with those most active in regional commerce.
As the sensitisation efforts continue, ECOWAS aims to build a more inclusive environment where stakeholders at all levels are empowered to contribute to regional development. By focusing on public participation and the prevention of social unrest, the campaign intends to strengthen the bonds between member states and their citizens. This collaborative approach is seen as a vital step in achieving the long-term goals of economic prosperity and lasting peace across West Africa.
