The Omanhene of the New Juaben Traditional Area, Daasebre Kwaku Boateng III, has declared his strong support for the Ghana Medical Trust Fund (GMTF), describing it as a crucial intervention for families burdened by high healthcare costs. Speaking during a visit from the Fund’s administrators in the Eastern Region, the traditional leader emphasized the importance of the initiative in providing relief to those suffering from chronic illnesses. He pledged to use the influence of the New Juaben Traditional Council to mobilize public awareness and ensure that citizens understand how to access the Fund's resources.
During the engagement, GMTF Administrator Adjoa Obuobia Darko-Opoku reported that the Fund has successfully assisted more than 800 patients within its first year of operation. Established under the leadership of President John Mahama, the GMTF is designed to make specialized medical care and life-saving treatments more accessible to Ghanaians who might otherwise be unable to afford them. Darko-Opoku noted that the visit to the New Juaben Traditional Area is part of a broader effort to strengthen community ties and improve public education regarding the Fund’s objectives.
The Omanhene highlighted the specific role of traditional authorities in bridging the gap between government initiatives and the local population. By educating citizens and helping to identify those in dire need of medical assistance, traditional leaders can help prevent the financial hardship that often accompanies serious health conditions. Local health officials present at the meeting also advocated for continued support for the GMTF, noting that such financial relief is essential to improving overall health outcomes and supporting the broader primary healthcare system in the region.
