Members of the Seventh-day Adventist (SDA) Church on Tuesday undertook a comprehensive cleaning and weeding exercise at the Wa Municipal Hospital in the Upper West Region. The initiative was designed to address critical environmental hygiene gaps at the facility, which is currently struggling with significant personnel constraints. By clearing overgrown weeds and cleaning the hospital grounds, the church aimed to reduce the risk of secondary infections and environmental hazards for patients and staff.
The intervention comes at a time when the Wa Municipal Hospital is grappling with a shortage of outdoor laborers and general staff. Joseph Adongo, the Hospital Administrator, expressed gratitude for the church’s support, noting that the facility's limited workforce has made it difficult to maintain the external environment to the required standards. He emphasized that a clean environment is essential for patient recovery and the prevention of diseases such as cholera, which thrive in unsanitary conditions.
During the exercise, Pastor Whaley Asonre Aboungo of the SDA Church called on local authorities and the national government to prioritize systemic improvements in waste management and public sanitation education. He specifically urged President John Mahama and local leaders to address the underlying labor shortages affecting public health institutions. The church indicated that it will assess the impact of this exercise and plans to extend similar community service initiatives to other public spaces in the Wa municipality to promote a culture of hygiene and environmental stewardship.
