Charles Asuako Owiredu, the Member of Parliament for Abirem, has officially commissioned a new mechanized borehole for the residents of Dodowraso in the Birim North District. The project is designed to provide immediate access to clean and safe drinking water, addressing a critical shortage that has plagued the community for years. By bringing a reliable water source directly to the community, the initiative aims to improve the daily lives and health outcomes of hundreds of residents.
Before the completion of this project, the people of Dodowraso relied on a single, non-mechanized borehole located a significant distance away. This situation forced women and children to undertake long journeys daily to fetch water. Most concerningly, the route required crossing a busy highway, which posed a constant threat of road accidents. The urgency of the project was underscored by the Assembly Member for the area, Constance Agyei, who recalled a tragic incident where a local child was killed while trying to fetch water across the road.
The new mechanized system effectively eliminates these safety risks while enhancing public health through improved sanitation and hygiene. During the commissioning ceremony, MP Charles Asuako Owiredu spoke about the fundamental necessity of potable water for the growth and well-being of the district. He highlighted that the project is part of a broader commitment to community development and ensuring that basic infrastructure reaches those who need it most.
In his concluding remarks, the Member of Parliament urged the residents and local leadership to establish a maintenance plan for the facility. He emphasized that the long-term benefits of the borehole depend on the community’s ability to protect and manage it effectively. Local leaders expressed their gratitude for the intervention, noting that the new water supply would allow children more time for their studies and reduce the physical burden on women in the community.
