Member of Parliament for Abirem, Charles Asuako Owiredu, has commissioned a mechanized borehole in Dodowraso, located in the Birim North District, to provide residents with reliable access to clean and safe drinking water. The intervention aims to resolve a long-standing water crisis in the community that had forced locals to rely on distant and often inadequate sources. By bringing potable water closer to the community center, the project is expected to enhance public health and ease the daily burden on households in the area.
Prior to the installation of this new facility, residents were forced to use a non-mechanized borehole located a significant distance away. This setup required women and children to undertake perilous journeys, often crossing a busy highway to fetch water for their daily needs. The safety risks associated with this crossing were a major concern for the community, as the high volume of traffic on the main road posed a constant threat to pedestrians carrying heavy loads of water.
The Assembly Member for the area, Constance Agyei, highlighted the severity of the previous situation by sharing a tragic account of a child who was killed in a road accident while attempting to fetch water. Agyei emphasized that the mechanized borehole will not only prevent such accidents but also significantly improve sanitation and hygiene standards within Dodowraso. The new facility is expected to drastically reduce the time spent on water collection, allowing children to focus more on their education rather than labor-intensive chores.
During the commissioning ceremony, Mr. Owiredu urged the residents to take full ownership of the project and establish a robust maintenance culture. He noted that the long-term sustainability of the borehole depends on the community's commitment to protecting the equipment from misuse and neglect. He reaffirmed his dedication to addressing the essential infrastructure needs of the Abirem constituency, noting that access to clean water is a fundamental right that supports broader development goals.
