Central Region Restricts Church Use of Classrooms as Christian Council Calls for Mission School Identity Protection

The intersection of religious practice and education in Ghana has come under renewed scrutiny following directives from the Central Regional Minister and advocacy from the Christian Council of Ghana (CCG). While regional authorities are moving to restrict the unauthorized use of public school facilities for religious services to preserve infrastructure, the CCG is pushing for reforms to safeguard the distinct religious identities of mission-founded schools while ensuring students' constitutional freedoms are respected. These simultaneous developments highlight the ongoing debate regarding the role of religion in Ghana's public and mission-founded educational institutions.

Central Regional Minister Ekow Panyin Okyere Eduamoah has officially directed school authorities across the region to cease allowing churches and religious groups to use public classrooms for worship without proper authorization. Speaking at a commissioning ceremony in Cape Coast, the Minister expressed grave concerns over the deteriorating state of educational infrastructure. He emphasized that the frequent, unregulated use of these facilities for religious activities leads to excessive wear and tear, often without corresponding maintenance or accountability from the groups involved. This directive aims to ensure that classrooms remain dedicated primarily to their intended educational purposes and are maintained for future generations of students.

Parallel to these administrative concerns, the Christian Council of Ghana is advocating for a more nuanced approach to religious life within schools. At a forum in Accra, Most Rev. Dr. Paul Kwabena Boafo, representing the CCG, emphasized the necessity of balancing the original religious character of mission schools with the modern constitutional rights of students. The Council is calling for specific reforms that would protect students against religious discrimination while allowing mission-founded institutions to maintain their foundational ethos and values. The CCG views education as a vital pillar of national development that must foster both academic excellence and moral grounding.

These developments highlight a dual challenge facing Ghana’s education sector: the management of physical assets and the protection of ideological heritage. As the Central Regional Minister enforces stricter controls on facility usage to preserve government property, the CCG’s call for reform suggests a need for a broader national dialogue on the role of faith in the classroom. Moving forward, the Ministry of Education and other stakeholders will likely face the task of drafting clearer guidelines that address both the practical maintenance of school buildings and the complex legal frameworks governing religious freedom and institutional identity in educational environments.
