Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has concluded a high-level study tour in Japan focused on leveraging advanced technology for national development. During his visit, Bawumia engaged with leading research institutions and private firms to explore practical solutions for Ghana’s most pressing challenges, particularly environmental degradation and the modernization of key economic sectors. The tour emphasized the integration of global innovation into local governance and resource management.
A central focus of the tour was a visit to the Japanese environmental technology firm 3R, where Bawumia explored specialized innovations in water recycling and soil decontamination. He highlighted the company's ability to remove mercury and other heavy metals from contaminated land, offering a potential path to restore Ghana’s ecosystems damaged by illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey. Bawumia expressed confidence that such sustainable technologies, backed by political commitment, could heal the environment and provide long-term solutions to mining-related pollution.
Beyond environmental restoration, the NPP flagbearer visited the Matsuo-Iwasawa Laboratory at the University of Tokyo, a world-renowned center for deep learning and Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI). Bawumia discussed how AI could be applied to transform healthcare, education, and agriculture. He emphasized the importance of translating academic research into actionable digital solutions to improve service delivery and economic efficiency, aligning with his long-standing focus on digitalization.
The study tour also extended into space technology through engagements with Japanese firms such as Axelspace and Hanibashi. Discussions centered on the use of satellite data and imagery to enhance flood management, monitor deforestation, and improve agricultural output. By utilizing satellite technology, Bawumia aims to boost the state's capacity to monitor natural resources and respond more effectively to environmental threats across the country.
This visit underscores Bawumia’s strategy of using scientific research and international partnerships as primary drivers for Ghana's future growth. By fostering ties with Japanese technological leaders, the NPP leader seeks to build a framework for innovation that addresses critical infrastructure and environmental needs through data-driven governance.
