Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has initiated legal action against New Patriotic Party (NPP) communicator Benjamin Gyewu-Appiah and Media General Ghana Limited. The defamation lawsuit, filed in the High Court on October 30, 2026, follows allegations made against the minister regarding his personal conduct and the use of public resources. The legal move marks a significant escalation in the dispute over comments broadcast on a national media platform.
The case centers on remarks made by Gyewu-Appiah, popularly known as "Benghazi," during an October 14, 2026, broadcast on Onua FM. During the program, the NPP communicator alleged that Minister Ablakwa was involved in a romantic relationship with the musician Fantana. More critically, the defendant claimed that the minister had misappropriated public funds in connection with this relationship. These assertions prompted immediate public attention and a strong reaction from the artist involved.
Media General, the parent company of Onua FM, has already issued a formal retraction and apology for the statements made during the broadcast. Despite this, the minister proceeded with the writ of summons against both the individual and the media organization to seek legal redress. Under the terms of the lawsuit, the defendants have been given an eight-day window to respond to the court following the service of the writ.
The lawsuit underscores the Minister's intent to protect his reputation against what he describes as baseless and defamatory claims. As the Foreign Affairs Minister in President John Mahama's administration, the allegations of financial misappropriation carry significant political weight. The court's upcoming proceedings are expected to clarify the boundaries of political commentary and the responsibilities of media houses in vetting claims made by live guests.
