Ghana has been officially selected to host the 10th Triennial World Assemblies of God Congress in October 2026, marking the first time the global gathering will be held on the African continent. The announcement follows a high-level meeting between a delegation from the Assemblies of God and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration. Scheduled for October 14 to 16, 2026, in Accra, the congress is expected to draw thousands of delegates from across the globe to the Ghanaian capital. The delegation, led by General Superintendent Rev. Stephen Wengam, met with Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa to discuss the logistical and spiritual preparations for the event. During the discussions, Rev. Wengam highlighted the significant economic and spiritual benefits the congress would bring to the country. He also formally requested the government’s assistance in facilitating visa procurement for international guests, ensuring a smooth entry for the thousands of participants expected from various continents.A central theme of the upcoming congress is the recognition of Ghana’s leadership, specifically that of President John Dramani Mahama. Rev. Wengam noted that President Mahama holds the historical distinction of being the first member of the Assemblies of God denomination globally to serve as a Head of State. This achievement was previously celebrated during the church’s centenary in the United States. While former Malawian President Lazarus Chakwera is also a member, Rev. Wengam clarified that Chakwera resigned his role as a General Superintendent before entering politics, making Mahama’s presidency a unique milestone for the church's lay membership.Minister Ablakwa reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting the church in hosting a successful event, noting the Assemblies of God’s impactful role in global evangelization. The 2026 congress will coincide with the 115th anniversary of the global movement, celebrating over a century of growth and mission work. By hosting this triennial event, Ghana positions itself as a central hub for major international religious conferences, reflecting both its diplomatic reach and its vibrant religious landscape.
