Asanko Gold Ghana Ltd has conducted a free health screening for over 300 residents within its host communities to mark Cancer Awareness Month. The initiative, focused primarily on breast and prostate cancer, aimed to provide critical health services and raise awareness about the importance of early detection and treatment. Residents from various catchment areas participated in the exercise, which integrated general medical check-ups with specialized cancer education and diagnostic sessions.
The screening program offered more than just cancer checks; participants also underwent tests for blood pressure and blood sugar levels. Medical professionals on-site provided educational sessions, teaching residents how to perform self-examinations and identifying symptoms that require immediate clinical attention. For individuals whose results indicated potential health issues, the mining company provided referrals to specialized facilities for further diagnosis and medical management.
Justice Fenteng, the General Manager of Asanko Gold Ghana, emphasized that the initiative reflects the company’s dedication to the well-being of its host communities. He urged residents to make their health a priority throughout the year, rather than waiting for annual awareness months. Supporting this call, the Paramount Queen Mother of the Manso Nkwanta Traditional Area, Nana Nyarko Aboraa Sika III, highlighted the necessity of regular medical check-ups and encouraged women, in particular, to seek early medical intervention for any abnormalities.
Beyond the community outreach, Asanko Gold Ghana extended the health initiative to its own workforce. Staff members participated in educational sessions and screenings at the company’s onsite clinic, ensuring that the message of early detection reached both external and internal stakeholders. By bridging the gap in healthcare access, the company aims to foster a healthier environment and reduce the long-term impact of preventable diseases in its operational areas.
