Fr. Arturo Sosa, SJ, the Superior General of the Society of Jesus, conducted an official visit to the Arrupe Jesuit Institute (AJI) in Accra on October 13, 2026, to evaluate the organization's mission and future direction. The visit provided an opportunity for the institute to showcase its contributions to addressing social challenges across Ghana and the African continent. Since its establishment in November 2018, the AJI has focused on utilizing Catholic Social Teaching and rigorous research to influence public policy and social discourse.
During a detailed briefing session, the AJI leadership presented its Strategic Plan for 2026-2029, which highlights a refreshed commitment to youth empowerment and advocacy. The plan identifies critical focus areas including migration research, ecology, and youth formation, aiming to create a platform for meaningful public engagement. The Superior General was briefed on the institute's ongoing initiatives that seek to bridge the gap between academic research and practical social interventions, particularly concerning the challenges faced by vulnerable populations in Africa.
Addressing the leadership and staff, Fr. Sosa emphasized the importance of ensuring the institute's long-term impact. He specifically encouraged the AJI to pursue diverse avenues for financial sustainability, noting that institutional stability is essential for the effective execution of their ambitious strategic goals. As the institute moves into its next phase of development, the Superior General's guidance is expected to shape its approach to donor relations and program management, ensuring that its research and advocacy continue to resonate both locally and internationally.
