Madam Alberta Ohenewa Awuku of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana has called for a renewed partnership between parents, teachers, and communities to foster both moral and academic excellence in children. Speaking during an Education Sunday sermon, she argued that character development must be prioritized alongside academic achievements to ensure students grow into responsible and well-rounded citizens. She emphasized that the responsibility of raising children should not rest on schools alone but requires a unified effort from all stakeholders in the community.
During her address, Awuku highlighted the critical role of adults as mentors, urging parents and teachers to model the positive behaviors they wish to instill in the youth. She specifically advocated for teachers to act as moral role models within the classroom, noting that their influence extends far beyond the academic curriculum. For the youth to develop a strong ethical foundation, she suggested that the guidance they receive at home must be reinforced by the standards upheld in their educational and religious institutions.
Awuku also challenged students to rethink the ultimate purpose of their education. She urged them to view their studies as a tool for societal betterment and nation-building rather than a mere path to personal financial gain. While acknowledging the importance of integrating technology and modern learning methods into the Ghanaian educational system, she insisted that such advancements must be anchored in Christian values to prevent the erosion of traditional morality in an increasingly digital age.
In her closing remarks, she called for a significant expansion of educational opportunities, particularly for those living in rural and underserved areas. By bridging the gap in access and strengthening the collaboration between the church, the community, and the state, she expressed confidence that Ghana can cultivate a generation that is both intellectually capable and ethically grounded. This holistic approach to education, she concluded, is essential for the long-term prosperity and stability of the nation.
