The Minister for Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has announced the commencement of construction on a new 400-bed Mother and Child Centre at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital (KBTH). The facility is intended to significantly enhance the delivery of maternal and neonatal healthcare services within the country. Speaking at a Health Sector Update Engagement in Accra, the Minister highlighted the project as a critical step in modernizing the infrastructure at Ghana's premier teaching hospital.
Designed as a "hospital within a hospital," the new centre will consolidate specialized services into a single, high-capacity facility. It will feature dedicated operating theatres and advanced medical equipment specifically tailored for maternal and child health needs. By adding 400 beds to the existing maternity framework, the government aims to address long-standing issues of congestion and improve the overall patient experience for expectant mothers and newborns at the referral hospital.
This construction project forms part of a broader government agenda to improve healthcare infrastructure nationwide. Minister Akandoh noted that in addition to the work at Korle Bu, the government is moving forward with the construction of three new regional hospitals in the Oti, Western North, and Savannah Regions. These initiatives are part of a strategic effort to decentralize specialized healthcare services and ensure that modern medical facilities are accessible to residents in all parts of the country.
