Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh has announced a significant government initiative to expand emergency medical capacity at four of Ghana's premier healthcare institutions. The targeted facilities include Korle Bu Teaching Hospital (KBTH), Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH), and the 37 Military Hospital in Accra. This strategic move aims to tackle the persistent challenges and bed shortages that have long plagued the country's emergency care departments and frequently led to the referral challenges known as the "no-bed syndrome."
Focusing on the critical needs at Korle Bu, the Minister highlighted that the facility currently operates with only 67 emergency beds despite having a total capacity of over 1,000 beds. To address this discrepancy, the government intends to construct a new 400-bed emergency facility as part of a comprehensive redevelopment project for the hospital. This massive increase in bed capacity is expected to ensure that patients in critical condition receive immediate attention without being turned away due to lack of space.
In addition to physical infrastructure, the Ministry of Health is introducing technological advancements and logistics improvements to the sector. A national electronic emergency bed management system is currently being piloted to provide real-time data on bed availability, allowing for more efficient patient transfers and resource allocation between hospitals. Furthermore, the Minister revealed plans to strengthen the National Ambulance Service by procuring 100 new ambulances by the year 2027 to ensure rapid response times across the country.
The government is also moving to ensure high standards of professionalism among health workers as these improvements are rolled out. Minister Akandoh indicated that the ministry is considering disciplinary measures against staff members identified in a recent emergency care review for negligence or misconduct. By combining infrastructure investment, digital coordination, and staff accountability, the government aims to create a more resilient and responsive emergency healthcare system for all Ghanaians.
