Afua Kobi Ampem Senior High School has emerged as the winner of the Ashanti Regional edition of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) inter-school quiz competition. The school outperformed Ibadur Rahman Academy SHS and the prominent Opoku Ware School to secure the regional title. This competition is part of a broader nationwide strategy by the NHIA to deepen understanding of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) among the youth and foster a culture of health literacy in second-cycle institutions.
Organized under the leadership of NHIA Chief Executive Dr. Victor Asare Bampoe, the regional event featured participation from 48 schools. The primary objective of the initiative is to equip students with comprehensive knowledge about the scheme's benefits, operational procedures, and its importance to national healthcare. According to Oswald Essuah-Mensah, the Acting Head of Corporate Affairs for the NHIA, the initiative seeks to cultivate a generation of young ambassadors who can champion the health policy and educate others within their respective local communities.
Representing the winning team, Jacqueline Aygabeng expressed her appreciation for the opportunity and highlighted the educational value of the contest. She noted that while the team initially faced challenges due to limited prior knowledge of the NHIS, the preparation process significantly expanded their understanding of the health insurance system. The competition served as a rigorous test of the students' research and analytical skills regarding Ghanaian health policy and the specifics of service delivery under the scheme.
Following this regional stage, 16 schools from across the country will advance to the zonal competitions. These qualifying teams will eventually compete in a grand finale scheduled to take place in Accra. The NHIA remains committed to using such platforms to ensure that the next generation of Ghanaians is well-informed about the financial protections and health services available through the national scheme, ultimately aiming to increase enrollment and active participation in the NHIS.
