Sarah Adwoa Safo, the former Member of Parliament for Dome-Kwabenya, has officially announced her intention to contest the New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary primaries for the 2028 general elections. In a statement released on October 22, 2026, the former Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection expressed her commitment to reclaiming the seat for the NPP following the party’s loss in the 2024 elections. Her declaration follows what she described as extensive consultations with party leadership and the constituents she previously served for 12 years.
Safo highlighted her deep-rooted connection with the more than 200,000 residents of the constituency, noting that her decision was heavily influenced by their shared aspirations and the ongoing developmental challenges facing the area. While acknowledging that she had considered professional opportunities outside the constituency, Safo stated that her responsibility to the people of Dome-Kwabenya remained her primary focus. She emphasized her track record during her three terms in office, asserting that while the constituency saw significant growth under her tenure, there is still much work to be done to improve local infrastructure and services.
The announcement has already drawn reactions from across the political spectrum, including from the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC). Julius Kwame Anthony, the NDC’s Deputy National Communications Officer, remarked that Safo’s comeback bid should serve as a wake-up call for the incumbent MP, Faustina Elikplim Akurugu. Anthony urged Akurugu to intensify her development efforts, arguing that the NDC cannot rely solely on national electoral trends to retain the seat in 2028. He emphasized that tangible local progress would be necessary to counter Safo's attempt to return to Parliament.
Safo is now awaiting the official timetable and guidelines from the NPP national executive committee to formally file her candidacy. She has called for constructive engagement among party members and constituents to ensure a focus on leadership that prioritizes development. As the NPP prepares for its upcoming primary cycle, Safo’s bid marks a high-profile attempt by the party to win back one of the most populous and strategically significant constituencies in the Greater Accra Region.
