The Ablekuma West Municipal Assembly has announced plans to complete and repurpose a long-stalled maternity block at the Dansoman Polyclinic, transforming it into a specialized children’s hospital. This initiative aims to address a critical gap in pediatric healthcare services within the municipality. The project, which has faced significant delays since work first began in 2018, is now slated for completion within 12 months once construction activities resume on the site.
Construction on the facility originally came to a standstill in 2020, primarily due to financial constraints and the encroachment of the building site by unauthorized occupants. Eric Nyame, the Assembly's Head of Works, indicated that the assembly intends to utilize its Common Fund to finance the remaining construction phases. However, a major hurdle remains: a group of mechanics currently occupying the site has requested compensation in exchange for their relocation. The assembly is actively working to resolve this dispute to ensure that contractors can return to the site without further disruption.
The revival of the project was highlighted during a recent inspection by the Public Interest and Accountability Committee (PIAC). The committee visited the municipality to assess various development projects, focusing on those that have previously received or were intended to receive petroleum revenue funding. PIAC officials used the visit to examine the specific challenges hindering the implementation of local infrastructure and to reinforce the necessity of transparency and accountability in the management of the nation's oil revenues.
Once completed, the specialized children’s hospital will serve as a vital addition to the healthcare landscape of Dansoman and its surrounding areas. By shifting the focus of the block from general maternity to specialized pediatric care, the assembly hopes to provide more focused medical attention for infants and children, thereby easing the pressure on the primary polyclinic. The project's success now depends on the timely resolution of the land encroachment issues and the consistent allocation of the necessary funds.
