Zuwera Mohammed Ibrahimah, the Member of Parliament for Salaga South, has urged Parliament to summon the Ghana Education Service (GES) and the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Welfare over their alleged failure to address sexual abuse at Obuasi Senior High Technical School (SHTS). Ibrahimah, who serves as the Vice-Chairperson of Parliament’s Gender, Children and Social Welfare Committee, is seeking a formal investigation into the matter following revelations of student mistreatment. The move follows an investigative documentary featuring testimonies from students who allege they were abused by the school’s headmaster. Ibrahimah noted that the number of reporting victims has grown from 16 to 19 since the documentary aired. She raised concerns about the psychological well-being of the students and alleged that there have been attempts by some stakeholders to silence the victims rather than seeking justice. The MP criticized the GES for its inaction, questioning why local directors and other authorities failed to act despite reports being made to them. She emphasized that the GES is primarily accountable for student safety and must explain the lack of progress in addressing these serious allegations. Ibrahimah intends to present a statement to the Speaker of Parliament to have the issue referred to the relevant committees for a thorough probe. This call for accountability highlights broader concerns regarding the protection of students within the second-cycle education system. Ibrahimah’s push for a parliamentary committee investigation aims to ensure that those responsible for both the alleged abuse and the subsequent cover-up are held to account, while providing a platform for the victims to receive the necessary support.
