The Zonta Club of Accra II, in collaboration with HelpAge Ghana, has conducted a comprehensive health screening exercise for 100 older persons at the HelpAge Centre in Osu, Accra. Organized as part of the club’s 30th-anniversary celebrations, the initiative focused on promoting healthy ageing and addressing the medical needs of the elderly within the community. The event offered vital health assessments and consultations aimed at the early detection and management of chronic conditions that frequently affect senior citizens.
During the exercise, participants received screenings for common age-related ailments, including hypertension, diabetes, and various types of cancer. Beyond the clinical tests, medical professionals provided specialized consultations and health education sessions. These sessions emphasized the importance of proper nutrition and the necessity of regular medical check-ups in maintaining quality of life during later years. To ensure immediate intervention, the club also provided free medications and spectacles to those identified with specific needs during the screenings.
Nana Eduwa Appiah, President of the Zonta Club of Accra II, reaffirmed the organization's dedication to community welfare and the support of vulnerable populations. She noted that while the club has a longstanding history of providing scholarships to girls, this anniversary milestone offered a significant opportunity to extend their philanthropic reach to the elderly. Ethel Boakye-Wilson of HelpAge Ghana also spoke at the event, calling for increased national attention to the welfare of older persons and noting that their unique health and social needs require more robust support systems.
Beneficiaries expressed their appreciation for the initiative, highlighting the financial relief provided by the free medical supplies and professional advice. The event underscores a growing need for targeted healthcare interventions for Ghana's ageing population, who often face barriers to accessing regular specialized care. As Zonta Club of Accra II continues its anniversary activities, the partnership with HelpAge Ghana serves as a model for community-based support for senior citizens in urban environments.
