The Zonta Club of Accra II, in a collaborative effort with HelpAge Ghana, hosted a comprehensive free medical screening event for older persons at the HelpAge Centre in Osu. Held to commemorate the club’s 30th anniversary, the initiative aimed to address the healthcare needs of a demographic often overlooked in standard health outreach programs. By focusing on the elderly, the two organizations sought to celebrate their contributions to society while ensuring they maintain their health and dignity.
During the outreach, beneficiaries were provided with a wide range of essential health services, including eye and breast examinations, as well as diagnostic tests for malaria and diabetes. Beyond the screenings, the event also involved the distribution of free medication and prescription spectacles to those in need. Following the medical assessments, participants engaged in various recreational activities, fostering a sense of community and well-being among the attendees.
Zonta Club President Nana Eduwa Appiah emphasized that the outreach was a core part of the club's mission to support vulnerable populations and recognize the lifelong contributions of the elderly. Madam Ethel Boakye-Wilson, Executive Director of HelpAge Ghana, echoed these sentiments, highlighting the unique challenges faced by older persons in accessing quality care. Both leaders called on corporate organizations and the wider community to increase their engagement and support for the elderly to ensure their golden years are spent in good health.
