Zeepay Ghana Limited and its Managing Director, Andrew Takyi-Appiah, have initiated legal action against MTN Ghana and its subsidiary, Mobile Money Fintech Limited, seeking GH₵15 million in damages. The lawsuit, filed at the High Court in Accra, centers on a dispute involving the registration of a corporate mobile money wallet. The plaintiffs contend that the account was improperly set up in the personal name of the Managing Director instead of the company, a move they argue has created significant administrative and legal hurdles for the fintech firm.
The legal battle follows a series of attempts by Zeepay to rectify the situation internally through administrative channels. According to court documents, the company has been requesting a correction of the account details since November 2023. Zeepay claims that despite their persistent efforts to engage MTN Ghana and its fintech wing, the registration error remained unaddressed for nearly a year. This persistent failure to correct the records, the plaintiffs argue, constitutes a breach of professional duty and a disregard for standard corporate mobile money protocols.
The suit seeks GH₵15 million in general and compensatory damages for what the plaintiffs describe as the detrimental impact of the misregistration on their business operations. Beyond the financial compensation, the legal action also requests a court order to compel the immediate transfer of the wallet into Zeepay Ghana Limited's corporate name. This case highlights broader concerns regarding customer service responsiveness and administrative accuracy within Ghana's digital financial sector, particularly as corporate entities increasingly rely on mobile money platforms for large-scale transactions.
