The Minister for Science, Technology and Innovation, Dr. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, has issued a stern warning regarding the irreversible damage caused by illegal mining to Ghana’s natural landscape. Speaking during a visit to illegal mining sites in Osino, the Minister stressed that the ongoing destruction of water bodies and farmlands for gold extraction poses a direct and severe threat to the nation’s food security and public health. She noted that the degradation of soil and water sources creates a legacy of environmental ruin that short-term economic gains cannot justify.
During her assessment of the affected areas, Dr. Agyeman-Rawlings highlighted the critical trade-off between mineral wealth and long-term survival. She questioned the ultimate value of gold if the surrounding environment is left devastated, famously remarking that the nation cannot eat or drink gold. The Minister cautioned that the pursuit of immediate financial benefits through galamsey is compromising the survival of future generations, as it leaves behind toxic soil and polluted water sources that are essential for life.
Dr. Agyeman-Rawlings further emphasized that safeguarding Ghana’s natural resources must be viewed as a collective responsibility rather than a task for the government alone. She called for a fundamental shift in societal attitudes toward resource management, advocating for unity and accountability among all citizens. By prioritizing environmental stewardship over mineral extraction, she argued, the country can ensure a livable and sustainable future for all Ghanaians.
