Dr. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, the Minister of Environment, Science, and Technology, has called for a strategic shift toward sustainable development in mining areas to ensure local populations are not left in poverty once operations cease. Speaking during an official visit to the Akyem Gold Mine, operated by Zijin Golden Ridge Limited, the Minister emphasized that the lifecycle of a mine must include a robust plan for the economic and environmental future of its host communities. She argued that the true measure of a mining company's success is the state of the environment and the economic health of the people left behind after the minerals are exhausted.
The Minister highlighted that responsible mining practices must encompass more than just extraction, specifically advocating for active land reclamation and the improvement of community livelihoods. During her tour of the facility, she inspected several environmental initiatives, including a dedicated reforestation project designed to restore the natural ecosystem. She also commended Zijin Golden Ridge for its adoption of eco-friendly technology, specifically noting the introduction of electric vehicles within its operations as a positive step toward reducing the industry's carbon footprint.
Addressing the broader challenges facing the sector, Dr. Agyeman-Rawlings also spoke on the persistent threat posed by illegal mining. She underscored the necessity for decisive government intervention and consistent support to protect the environment from degradation caused by unregulated activities. By urging formal mining companies to lead by example with eco-friendly practices, the Minister aims to establish a framework where mining serves as a catalyst for long-term regional prosperity rather than a temporary economic boom followed by environmental decay.
