The Minister of Environment, Science and Technology, Dr. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, has announced the government's intention to transform the Ghana Space Science and Technology Institute (GSSTI) into a formal National Space Agency. This initiative, unveiled as part of her First 100 Days Public Engagement Agenda, aims to centralise and coordinate the nation's space activities while strengthening Ghana's participation in the burgeoning global space economy. The transition represents a strategic shift toward institutionalising space science as a core component of national development.
To facilitate this transformation, the Ministry is preparing a Bill for the agency’s establishment, which will be submitted for Cabinet approval. Once established, the Ghana Space Agency will be responsible for overseeing national space programmes, promoting advanced research, and spearheading the development of critical space infrastructure. The Minister emphasised that the legislative framework is a necessary step to provide the agency with the mandate and resources required to operate effectively on the international stage.
The Ministry’s strategy is anchored on five key pillars: institutional transformation, the development of space infrastructure, environmental sustainability, human capital development, and the promotion of private sector partnerships. Dr. Agyeman-Rawlings highlighted the practical applications of space-based technology in vital sectors such as telecommunications, disaster management, and environmental monitoring. By leveraging satellite data, the government intends to improve agricultural yields and enhance its ability to track environmental changes across the country.
A significant focus of the new agency will be the cultivation of local expertise through collaborations between educational institutions, industry stakeholders, and international partners. The Minister noted that building human capital is essential for sustaining long-term growth in the technology sector. By positioning Ghana as a regional hub for space technology, the government seeks to foster innovation and create high-value opportunities within the scientific community, ensuring the nation remains competitive in the global technological landscape.
