The Youth Employment Agency (YEA) has successfully registered more than 100,000 beneficiaries between January 2025 and September 2026, marking a significant milestone in the government's push for youth job creation. According to the agency's Chief Executive Officer, Malik Basintale, this figure represents approximately 75.7% of the YEA's annual recruitment target of 133,000. This achievement occurs during the first term of President John Mahama’s administration, following his inauguration in January 2025.
Speaking at a press conference at Jubilee House, Mr. Basintale highlighted a dramatic 566.67% surge in recruitment activities since February 2025. To support the living standards of those enrolled, the agency has also implemented a 60% increase in monthly allowances for all beneficiaries. The CEO noted that the Trades and Vocation module has emerged as the strongest performing sector, showing high levels of engagement and skill acquisition among the Ghanaian youth.
Beyond temporary placement, the YEA is focusing on the long-term career prospects of its participants. Mr. Basintale revealed that many beneficiaries currently enrolled in security-related programmes are expected to transition into permanent positions within the national security services once their current engagements conclude. This strategy aims to reduce churn and provide sustainable livelihoods for the agency’s trainees.
Looking ahead to 2027, the agency plans to expand its programmes and reach even more young people across the country. However, Mr. Basintale acknowledged that the YEA continues to face funding challenges that could impact the scale of its future operations. To address these hurdles and facilitate further growth, the agency is seeking legislative amendments that would provide more robust support for its employment initiatives and vocational training modules.
